Responsible for keyboards, Sharon had the ideal canvas to add atmosphere and music to a Heavy Metal outfit, that could have so easily, left these areas secondary, to the energy that HM is famous for. That didn't mean that the force of Tangent's music was arrested; more like redirected to the "Heavy Progressive Rock" feel that Tangent produced.
This approach, allowed the band room to develop, and change direction if the need was there. Sharon, like all the members of Tangent, had much to contribute.
Sharon, also could be found organising Tangent's finances. Although Joe Wallis handled much of the management, Sharon was always ready to take on her share of the non musical duties that are often forgotten, when you think of a typical rock band.
Sharon Pilka was a founder member of Tangent. Before the band, Sharon had been listening to a large selection of "serious" rock bands and musicians. This was somewhat unusual, as in many cases girls are targeted for "fashion pop" rubbish, that is force fed to them, and indeed to many youngsters. Fortunately, there are some that are above fickle music, and Sharon was one of these. Bands like YES and early GENESIS, were part of her listening and that high calibre progressive rock background, was brought to Tangent from the start. Sharon, actually first advertised for musicians, and although the concept for a band was not an issue at that stage, the three founder members, (Joe Wallis, Karl Poulton and Sharon) were met.
